BRAC Puts Job in Jeopardy -- Now What?
October 14, 2009
Here is a tough one. I’m currently an YC02 (GS13), working at and Army installation which has been effected by BRAC and moved my position to another state. Due to the family situation I wasn’t able to move with my current job.
My position is currently going into a RIF status, which will keep me in place until July 2010. I’m applying like crazy for positions within my current installation and surrounding areas to stay in government service.
I currently have seven years of federal service under my belt -- I retired from the Army in 1994 as a CW2. I also worked for eight years in local economy and established great business connections during that time.
As I stated before, I’m applying for government positions, and getting some interviews and interest from Army leadership, but nothing firm has came up. At the same time local businesses and organizations know that I’m on the market and want me to return to the private sector -- making the same or the possibility of making more money with more growth potential.
Here's my dilema: Do I have too much time vested already in the government toward another retirement? Or, do I jump and make up the difference on the outside working for private industry?
(Mr. Jorge Rio)

Difficult for anyone but you to answer, but I'd have to know that the company/organization and the outside positions are recession-proof and in demand. You didn't state your age, but we know that the move into retirement is already in a strong upward momentum. Based on your situation it appears that you might have to make a short-term re-location to stay in the government. I don't think time on either side matters except that your skills are in demand.

Another idea to consider is commuting between the new location and your home. Get a cheap apartment that you crash in from Monday thru Thursday, and then fly/drive home. Real issue is whether or not your boss and you are on good terms, and if you have a role that allows for some flexibility in your hours. Can you work 40 hours in 3 days, etc?
Good luck amigo!

BRAC on the attack ?
Your job may be eliminated, but you've got an edge that no eliminated job can take away.
It's the same edge we ALL have having served, or are yet serving. And that is that we were taught EXTREMELY WELL to "Train the way you'll fight. Fight the way you've trained" ! Why? Because lives, and livelihoods are at stake; yours and those who depend upon you and your training.
Whether you are still in the service, about to exit the service, or have LONG since left or retired, one constant battle NEVER goes away. And that is the necessity to take care of yourself and those who depend upon you, financially.
The lessons you were taught IN the military still apply OUT of the military....just in a different arena. And just as effectively.
BEAT THE BRAC ATTACK with what you've been trained to do!
