You Have What Employers Need
October 2, 2009
I had perhaps one of the best transition periods of any Soldier.
When I left the Army in April 1999 I went right into a position that had been offered to me in my hometown six months prior to my retirement.
During my interview, I was told that I was just what the agency was looking for and that the intelligence job was mine at the salary I requested. I've been here 10 years now and things couldn't be better.

Transition to the private sector can be daunting, but with the new Health Information Technology (HIT) being pushed by the White House, there are tremendous opportunities for those who have interest in healthcare and IT. The American Society of Health Informatics Managers (www.ASHIM.ORG) has a great website that can provide information for those interested. The most important aspect of HIT in the private sector is that you have experienced Electronic Health Records (HER) while in the military. According to experts the major obstacle to completing HIT nationwide is the lack of capable professionals to implement the system. Check it out!

My company is actually looking for soldiers for account rep positions. We're a growing medical company marketing a new, one-of-a-kind humidification system for trach patients. Positions are sales commission and we need people all over the country. We're looking for medics, respiratory nurses, RRTs and RTs. If you know anyone, we'd love to talk to them. They can call Vicky Gates at 305-289-7369 or email her at vickygates@wrighttrachsolutions.com

I am an O-3 in the Corps and am considering to transition after I complete my PhD in Berkeley.
However, my concern is that the jobs in my field and in engineering have simply disappeared. I can forsee years of under and unemployment.
This is my fear!

You've spoken true words affirming that you (and we) have what employers need. I, too, served in the military. As a matter of fact, I retired honorably from the U.S. Air Force in 1997 after serving 24 years...and had a job waiting for me with a Defense Contractor.
However, being laid off FROM that job 2 years later was not what I expected, AT ALL. I learned, the hard way, that the transition does not end once you've found a job on the "outside". But being laid off only reaffirmed that not only did I have what employers wanted, but that I HAVE SOMETHING MORE !
I had, and HAVE a deeply ingrained, well taught outlook I received FROM the military that applies even though I've been out of the military nearly 12 years !
What more ? Same as you...and all of us.
Oh, YES ! You've GOT what it takes !
Now TAKE what you've got....and use it!
